Layout - Western Layouts

The last assignment for our layout class this semester was to take five of our storyboards - an establishing shot, three in sequence, and a pan - and work them up into full, layered layouts in photshop and tone them. These are my five, and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. If nothing else, I've learned how to draw rocks this semester.

Digital Painting

Digital Painting - Storyboard Panels

After the western storyboard assignment, we had a painting assignment to take four storyboard panels and paint them. I'm not particularly happy with how these turned out, but I took it as an exercise to learn about painting with the pen tool, which has helped me with other projects since.

Caricature

Caricature - Self

School is out for the summer! One of the first things I did with my newfound free time was to make up a new caricature of myself. I still have a few last assignments to upload, but after that updates may become sporadic as I find time to work to personal pieces.

Animation

Animation - Muzzle & Beak Sync

Our last two animation assignments were to do a lip and body sync of a muzzled character and a  beaked character. I chose to combine the two in a question/response clip from Back to the Future.

This was my first time animating in Flash. I like the looseness it affords with onion skinning and instant playback, but with my tablet it lacks precision in cleanup. I'll be looking into working on the cintiqs in the fall which might help with this. Being in flash, though, I also took advantage of its capabilities to colour this assignment. I'm quite happy with how this one turned out.

If it seems a bit laggy, that's the fault of YouTube and I don't know why it's doing that.

Layout

Layout - Western Studies

In preparation for the western layout assignments, we did research and studies on different elements of the period, such as characters, costume, props, buildings, environment, etc. See a selection of my studies after the break.

3D Modelling

3D Modelling - Organic Character

Our last assignment for 3D Modelling this semester was to take a previously designed character and create a model of them in Maya. I chose my tanuki character from the Japanese assignment. It was a bit tricky to get him looking right, as he's the most complicated model I've attempted so far, not to mention his slightly graphic quality. This is also my first real texturing and lighting attempt. Overall, I like how this turned out and hope to rig it eventually.

Here are his original designs, for reference.

Character Design

Character Design - Poses

Our last assignment for character design this semester was to take a previously designed character and pose them out through a specified sequence of six poses; in this case, sneaking up and taking an object, then getting caught and feeling guilty. Not particularly happy with this one, but I was focusing on other assignments at the time.

Layout

Layout - Production Designs

So the next step of the layout asignment was to create some Production Designs for the western storyboard. These are mine. I decided to throw in some colour on one of them, not for the assignment, but just because I liked the graphic look of it. I clearly enjoyed one of them much more than the other.
